The village “Gatepalli” is 87 Kms from and 17 Kms from vikarabad town. The village is sidelined as you have a distance of 4 kms to travel from the Vikarabad – Tandur main road.
The village has a primary school untill 5th class, and for high school - students go to the nearby village “kerelli” which is 5 kms. There are large number of youth and children but have to travel significantly larger distances of 17 Kms for any information, which most of the times is skipped.
With a deep understanding of the problems that are encountered in the village, and with the blend of experience that the seva samthi has got by having adopted several villages they identified gatepalli as a village for development and have taken the adoption of the village.
In the process setting up a village library was the crux of it. We as a group were also looking to help the unemployed youth and the children by what we know the best that is in field of education. We had the oppurtunity - we clinged on to it.
To brief you about the library (the picture to the left), was once a school building as a new school building is built up, is in the heart of the village making it convenient for everyone to come and access the books and share the knowledge.
It has been in rubbles since the new school has come up, the herculian task of setting up of renovating the building, gathering books and infrastructure was estimated to be Rs 14000. We have made a prime contribution of Rs 8000, which was invaluable at the point of time.
The primary objectives that would meet with the libarary are
1. Giving the guidance for higher educational and job oppurtunities for youth
2. Shaping and moulding of the children
3. Act as a training center for people who cannot afford the luxury of tutions
The objectives are met with the following actions that are being taken
1. The knowledge center will host books covering
a. Academic books relating to their subjects
b. All the competitive exam like EAMCET, ICET, DSC ,etc.
c. News papers and weekly’s
2. There will be a weekly class conducted to teach students the moral
stories and importance of education.
3. Seniors students can help juniors in their academics and act like their
mentors.
a. An instance of which when I was in the village, I met a student who lost 5 subjects in 10th class and is preparing for the supplementary exams, the man in the photo extreme right is helping him out in sorting out some of the subjects. He is also the bala vikas guru there.
To summarize “Village Knowledge Center” in Gattepalli Village is a boon to the people in the extreme remote village which by making the youth realize the opportunities outside and making children a better youth is building up the village and the country by and large, I am quite happy to be part of it and wish we will continue the journey.
